Pillar 2: Heritage

The maintenance and development of the rich heritage of Kells village

“Kells Priory is Ireland’s largest walled monastic settlement. The Priory was founded by the Augustinian Order in 1193 who bestowed us this unique heritage which is ours to cherish and enjoy today. Kells built heritage is testament to the hard work and foresight of those gone before us – the legacy of which we see in our village to this day. The community in Kells are very proud to be the custodians of a rich heritage going back almost a thousand years and Kells village still boasts many features that allow us interpret and understand what life was like for our ancestors. We are committed to developing our community in a fashion that protects and indeed enhances this heritage, it is only by building on this past that we can develop our future. The community in Kells will strive to ensure that the oral, written and built history of our community is maintained and passed on to future generations.
We aim to create an environment where the rich history of Kells can be understood by those who live within our community and can be shared with our visitors and guests.”

What Progress has the Village already made under this Pillar?

A good deal of progress has already been made in this area. In particular Mullins Mill is now a self-sustaining entity and all of the floors are in use for village-related activities. The table here recounts some of the milestones already achieved.
