Pillar 1: Environment

This Pillar represents:

• the built and natural environment,
• community facilities, and
• environmental awareness and education.
This pillar seeks to ensure the continuing development of amenities and infrastructure that enhance the village’s appearance and provide high-quality services to its residents.

What Progress has the Village already made under this Pillar?
A great deal of progress has been made over the years in relation to enhancing the appearance of the village and village amenities.
Kells Tidy Towns and KREE have been particularly proactive in maintaining and enhancing the appearance of the village and creating a sense of communal ownership. Their work has resulted in enhanced performance of the village in the National Tidy Towns Competition and two nominations to the National Pride of Place competition. This, in turn, has attracted funding under The County Village Re-newal Programme.

Village Renewal

Kells was chosen by Kilkenny Co. Council to participate in the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. A range of enhancements have been undertaken and completed. These are outlined in the Tables here.

All of these works were facilitated by the voluntary work of the village’s residents who gave of their time and labour to ensure successful outcomes for each project.

Total grant-aid approved in 2016 under the scheme amounted to €112,500.
All of the works associated with this grant were undertaken in 2017.
